Land mAnagement for improved Yields, Environmental Resilience, and Sustainability
The LAiYERS research site was established in 2021, as an ongoing research project funded by the Iowa Egg Council, with the design and installation of 27 tile-drainage quarter-acre plots to evaluate the impacts of combined field management and conservation practices on soil health, water quality, and crop yields. The system considers manure application timing, cover crops, strip till, and nutrient application timing, all in a corn-soybean rotation. This unique study will provide important information to farmers on how to best manage these systems for a range of environmental benefits, including soil health and resiliency to climate change. This site continues to generate additional research projects and build on our research team. Iowa Soybean Association has funded the ongoing water quality, soil health, and cover crop study for the 2024 season. A project funded by the Iowa Nutrient Research Center utilizes the 12 no cover crop plots to evaluate nitrogen dynamics with manure application. The Egg Industry Center has funded a project to measure the mineralization and movement of nitrogen in the soil with early winter poultry manure application, while sampling subsurface tile drainage water for the dissolved greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. A complementary grant has been awarded by SoilTech to include the spring manure application plots in the mineralization study and add in-situ measurement of soil moisture, temperature, and nitrates to the spring and early winter manure treated plots.
